Recently, Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT) prepared two special "compulsory courses" for its 2026 freshmen. One was a training session on life-saving first aid skills, and the other was a lecture on sex education. The courses are designed to enhance freshmen's awareness of self-rescue, mutual aid and scientific protection, laying a solid foundation for a safe and fulfilling university life.

Learn First Aid Skills

Shortly after the new semester began, GTIIT invited the "All for Life" team from the First Affiliated Hospital of Shantou University Medical College to provide freshmen with a highly informative first aid skills training session.

During the training, medical experts used real-life cases and plain language to explain the importance of first aid, focusing on three core skills:

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): From assessing consciousness and calling for help, to the depth (greater than 5 cm), frequency (100-120 compressions/minute), and coordination with artificial respiration, the team broke down each step to ensure every participant understood each link in the "chain of life."

AED Usage: Through a live simulator demonstration, the operation of an automated external defibrillator (AED) was clearly explained, including its activation, electrode placement, and operating procedures, highlighting the crucial role of using an AED within the "golden four minutes" of cardiac arrest.

Bandaging and Hemostasis Techniques: For common injuries such as sprains, fractures, and head wounds, various methods were demonstrated, including figure-eight bandaging, splints combined with serpentine bandaging, and gauze with nylon mesh fixation, as well as the correct use of tourniquets.

Under the guidance of medical staff, the students took turns practicing CPR, AED simulation, and bandaging, further consolidating their first-aid skills.

Know Scientific Sex Protection

A special lecture on STI prevention unfolded in a relaxed yet rigorous atmosphere. A clinic staff member explained the transmission routes and prevention of common STIs, using real cases to help students understand sexual health and dispel misconceptions.

At the lecture, the medical staff outlined the three main transmission routes of STIs:

• Sexual contact transmission: This is the most common route, including unprotected vaginal intercourse, anal sex, and oral sex.

• Indirect contact transmission: Although the probability is lower, contact with contaminated towels, tableware, public baths, etc., can also cause infection.

• Blood and mother-to-child transmission: This includes sharing syringes and vertical transmission from mother to child, and also requires high vigilance.

Understanding the transmission routes is just the start; more importantly, build the "three lines of defense" for self-protection in daily life:

• First line of defense: Establish healthy sexual attitudes. Refuse multiple sexual partners and avoid early sexual activity to reduce risks at the source.

• Second line of defense: Pay attention to daily hygiene habits. Do not share personal items with others and raise awareness of protection in public places.

• Third line of defense: Correctly use condoms. This is the most critical step, effectively preventing various diseases such as HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B, and reducing the risk of unintended pregnancy.

  
  

Sex education is a vital lesson that helps students approach intimate relationships rationally. It is not only about spreading physiological knowledge, but also about fostering healthy attitudes and a sense of responsibility. Only by mastering scientific protection methods can students effectively reduce health risks and be responsible for themselves and others.

A new chapter of university life is unfolding. May every freshman cherish life, stay healthy, and with a strong body and a positive mindset, grow and thrive in their youth.
